The Coracle Trust 20 to 40s group meets fortnightly on the first and third Tuesdays of the month at Kenny and Bridget's home in central Edinburgh for informal study and fellowship.
The meetings provide an encouraging and supportive environment for exploring the meaning of the Christian worldview and its application to the stuff of everyday life. Discussion is led without being prescriptive, either by Kenny and Bridget or a guest speaker, in an atmosphere of commitment to one another and care for each person.
The group is truly ecumenical, attended by a flatful of 20 to 30 somethings from churches across Edinburgh's denominational spectrum, including episcopalians, presbyterians and baptists. It is also international, including participants from the United States, New Zealand and Australia, as well as all parts of the UK.
Subjects explored so far...
Kenny and Bridget use their theological training and years of experience in Christian ministry to prepare the study material, which is loosely based on an 'Experience > Exploration > Reflection > Response' model.
The meetings are frequently 'led' by guest speakers who draw on their experience in a particular theological field to illuminate a discussion topic. Recent guests have included lecturers in theology and Old Testament studies from Edinburgh University's New College, and rectors from a number of Edinburgh churches.
Here are some of the topics the group has looked at:
- Christianity and the secular workplace
- War, pacificism and Christian ethics
- The relevance of the Old Testament
- Christianity and psychoanalysis
- Christianity and other religions
- The concepts of orthodoxy and heresy
- Theological themes in Lord of the Rings...
Many of the participants have a keen concern for social justice and environmentalism, and have set up sub-groups to explore these issues in depth.
